PDP Faction Denies Plans to Make Jonathan 2027 Presidential Candidate

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports claiming it planned to adopt former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The group described the reports as false, misleading, and unauthorized, insisting that no official convention or meeting had been approved to endorse Jonathan for the presidency.

In a statement issued on Friday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said the party leadership never sanctioned any gathering aimed at affirming Jonathan as candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the reports were designed to create confusion and unnecessary tension within the political space.

“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement read.

The clarification followed reports that a factional Interim National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki planned to hold a convention in Abuja to ratify Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.

The development comes amid ongoing divisions and parallel leadership claims within opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP faction also called on security agencies to investigate those behind the reports and prosecute anyone found responsible for spreading what it described as politically provocative misinformation.

The party further urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the alleged endorsement move in order to protect his reputation and preserve democratic credibility.
