Rivers Police Discipline Officer After Suspect Escapes From Custody

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced disciplinary action against a police officer over alleged negligence linked to the escape of a suspect during an investigation in Port Harcourt.

According to reports, the suspect who was earlier arrested in connection with a criminal case escaped while being taken to a crime scene visit as part of ongoing investigative procedures.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson on Saturday, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the police disclosed that ASP Ekawhe Thomas, attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, had been detained and formally queried following a preliminary review of the incident.

According to the statement, the officer was subjected to disciplinary procedures in line with regulations guiding the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command also confirmed that efforts were ongoing to track down and rearrest the suspect who remains at large, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape continue.

Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju expressed dissatisfaction over the incident, stressing that the police remain committed to professionalism, accountability, discipline, and the rule of law.

The police boss warned that the Command would not tolerate negligence, misconduct, or abuse of office by any personnel, adding that any officer found culpable after investigation would face decisive sanctions in accordance with existing laws and disciplinary regulations.

The Command further assured residents of its commitment to transparency, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
