The Chief of Staff to Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, escaped unharmed after gunmen attacked his convoy along the Amansea–Ufuma Road in Anambra State.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening as Nwankwo was returning from an official engagement, reportedly claimed the lives of two police officers attached to his security detail. Other occupants of the convoy sustained varying degrees of injuries during the ambush.
According to security sources, the attackers opened fire on the convoy without warning, triggering a gun battle between the gunmen and security personnel escorting the governor’s aide. Despite the assault, Nwankwo was safely evacuated from the scene.
The incident prompted an emergency response from the Anambra State Police Command, which immediately launched a manhunt for those responsible.
Reacting to the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, issued a 48-hour directive to tactical units and security formations across the state to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
“I want you to fish out the attackers and the killers of our officers. I demand immediate action to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act,” the police commissioner said.
He further assured residents that the command would not allow criminal groups to operate freely within the state.
“The people of Anambra State must know that the police are fully in charge and ready to protect them,” Orutugu stated.
Describing the attack as unacceptable, the commissioner vowed that those behind the ambush would be brought to justice.
“This kind of killing cannot happen under my watch. We must bring the perpetrators to justice and put an end to their activities,” he added.
Police authorities disclosed that intelligence-led operations had already commenced across the affected area, while additional security measures were being deployed along vulnerable routes.
